An innovative solution, Powerline MU enables service providers, building owners and businesses to transform a building's internal electrical system into a powerful communications network. Powerline MU uses Canopy Access Points and Subscriber Modules to send signals to a Powerline MU Gateway. The Gateway then injects the signal directly into the electrical lines. For broadband access, subscribers simply plug their computer or router into the Powerline Modem. Since the Gateway is located in the building's electrical distribution area, coordination with the electric utility is not typically needed. A licensed electrician is required for gateway installation.
By adding broadband technology to the power grid, property owners and managers can also enhance their ability to monitor their building's management and communication with their tenants. For instance, a Property Manager can use a BPL system to install IP video surveillance cameras, alarm and HVAC systems or tenant communication systems for mass evacuation or notification. In fact, several major metros have adopted or are considering ordinances that require automated tenant communication for buildings of a certain size.
The Powerline MU solution can be viewed in one of two ways:
- It is an extension to the Canopy wireless broadband system that will allow more subscribers to be reached at a lower cost than could otherwise be achieved with only wireless access for multiple users.
-
It is also a new and improved method of providing alternative broadband services over power lines that addresses the high equipment and installation costs and RF interference issues that exist with other current BPL solutions on the market today (see note above regarding medium voltage solutions).
